The General Directorate for Public Procurement is part of the General Secretariat for Commerce and Consumer Protection of the Ministry of Development and Investments is the National Central Purchasing Body for goods and general services, excluding the goods and services for the Health Sector.

The National Central Purchasing Bodies are the contracting authorities or the contracting entities which provide central purchasing activities and probably ancillary purchasing activities and they are responsible for the national planning, scheduling and coordination of central and ancillary purchasing activities of all the other Central Purchasing Bodies.

The General Directorate for Public Procurement is also the proceeding public authority for the Green Public Procurement (GPP) national policy formulation and the preparation of the National Action Plan for GPP, according to the EU legislation provisions.

The combination of these two roles enables the General Directorate for Public Procurement to promote GPP vigorously at national level by raising awareness of the contracting authorities on GPP and the National Action Plan for GPP and by providing central purchasing activities with green criteria at national level, being a good example for the contracting authorities at national, regional and local level.
